What to see in Guimarães
Palace of the Dukes of Braganza
The place was built at the beginning of the 1420s by Afonso, Count of Barcelo, the illegitimate son of John I. You can find there courtyards with galleries and Gothic pointed arches and tall, narrow brick chimneys.
Historic Guimarães
Even tough Guimarães is UNESCO billing, it’s a lived-in working town. You may contemplate the beauty of stiff slopes with grand squares and majestic convents, churches and mansions on a stroll through the city center.
Monte da Penha
You can use a cable car from Guimarães to the top of this hill that has lots of terraces and platforms to enjoy a scenery. It is not only place full of marvelous views, but also a pilgrimage site.
Guimarães Castle
This castle was erected on a rise just north of where the city is today, and In the 12th-century it was the seat of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques. It is definitely worth to be seen.
